GarageBand turns your Mac into an anytime, anywhere recording studio packed with hundreds of virtual musical instruments and a recording engineer or two for good measure. It’s the easiest way to create, perform and record your own music. GarageBand, the newest member of iLife, lets you create your own music to play behind slideshows, add to motion menus, burn to CDs or score your iMovie projects.

Compose Yourself

You don’t have to play the piano. You don’t have to read music. You don’t even have to have rhythm. If you know what you like when you hear it, you can make your own kind of music. With GarageBand.

The easiest way for anyone — pro or novice alike — to perform, record and create music, GarageBand turns your Mac into a digital recording studio — complete with instruments, pre-recorded loops, amps, effects and editing tools. Why, you’ll even find virtual recording engineers in the mix to help you out. GarageBand gives you all the tools you need to create the perfect music to complement your iPhoto slideshows, dramatise your iMovie productions or play behind the menus in your latest iDVD project.

Riffs Included

How easy is it to create your own music in GarageBand? If you know how to click, drag and drop, you’re well on your way to becoming a GarageBand wiz. Since not everyone has a garage, let alone a band to invite over, we thought you might appreciate having a few professional musicians sit in on your sessions. You’ll find more than a thousand of their riffs on your Mac after you install GarageBand. These pre-recorded, CD-quality Apple Loops are all royalty-free interludes, played in a variety of moods (acoustic, relaxed, melodic) and genres (country, electronic, jazz) and on an array of instruments (synthesizers, banjo, electric guitar).

Tap your Inner Mozart

You can keep adding tracks or you can edit the tracks you’ve already laid down. Need a longer sound? Just grab the end of the loop and drag to extend any loop to the length you need. You can adjust the volume and balance of each track individually, even have the volume of a select track fade in or out.

If you are musically inclined, you can do even more with GarageBand. You can, for instance, plug your guitar, keyboard or microphone into your Mac to record your own parts and lean on GarageBand to supply all the backing tracks you need. Just pick and choose what you like to set the foundation — a little acoustic bass here, a tambourine loop there — then lay down a few tracks of your own to complete the mix. In fact, with that electric guitar of yours, you have access to virtual guitar amps that let you emulate such classic and modern sounds as Clean Jazz, Arena Rock, Indie and others.

Use Your Own Music

Satisfied with your opus? Choose Export to iTunes from the File menu to move the new arrangement into your iTunes music library. In fact, iTunes 4.2 automatically creates a playlist in your name. See, you’re famous already. From there you can burn it to a CD, transfer it to your iPod or use it in one of your iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD projects like any other song in iTunes

Great Features

  • Turn your Mac into a grand piano or over 50 pro-sounding instruments
  • Record with any USB or MIDI keyboard, guitar or microphone
  • Mix your hit using professional effects and settings

Built-in Instruments

Open GarageBand’s Loop Browser and look around. Select an instrument — Drums, for example — and GarageBand displays the drum loops in its results list. Simply click on a loop to hear it play.

When you find a drum part you like, drag it into the GarageBand timeline and you’re well on your way to creating your very first song. Want to add a bass track? This time, select Bass, preview the bass loops listed in the results list and drag the one you like into the timeline. Don’t worry: GarageBand automatically matches tempo, beat and key, so your selections will sound great together.
