Native Instruments Guitar Rig Review
By Saved By Technology Product Specialist Chris Seldon

Guitar Rig from Native Instruments combines software and hardware in a single package.

It’s designed to give guitar players the ability to create a number of vitual guitar 'rigs' on their Mac or PC.

Running in stand-alone, RTAS, VST, Direct X and AU, Guitar Rig combines popular amplifier and effects models in a simple drag and drop format. Amp models include Marshall Plexi, Vox AC30, Fender Blackface, Mesa Rectifier etc.

The user can begin to build a rig by simply dragging an amp model into the rig window, choosing a cabinet and microphone combination, adding some classic guitar effects (including pitch shifting and wah) and auditioning the resulting rig.

Some of the cooler features are the ability to split amp and effect combinations through an A and B signal chain, allowing the player to create radical combinations and pan them individually. You can also crossfade the different setups from the included floorboard pedal.

One of the nicest features of guitar rig (other than the fact that's really easy to use) is the ability to instantly save complex patches in memory. Try doing this with a POD or a traditional FX box and you'll see the benefit here. I also like the abilty to bring up guitar rig as a VST plug-in and applying the effects to other tracks (drums etc.).

When was the last time you heard an Ibanez Tube Screamer on backing vocals? I didn’t think so.

The sound quality, ease of use, floorboard with volume/expression pedal, and great graphics all make Guitar Rig a tool every computer-based guitar player will want to check out.
